The Extended Constructed Response (ECR) is the highest-value item on the STAAR Reading Language Arts assessment. Although it represents only one question, it is worth 10 points on every STAAR RLA assessment—approximately 19% of total points in Grades 3–5, 18% in Grades 6–8, and 16% in English I and II.
The chart below shows the percentage of students statewide who earned a score of 0 on the ECR from 2023–2026. A score of 0 means the response did not meet the minimum criteria necessary to earn points on the rubric.
These trends reveal a persistent statewide challenge. Across multiple grade levels and administrations, a substantial percentage of students are unable to successfully demonstrate their understanding through extended written responses. Because the ECR carries significant weight on the assessment, improving students' ability to read, analyze, organize ideas, cite evidence, and communicate their thinking in writing remains one of the highest-leverage opportunities for increasing overall STAAR performance.
